What roof waterproofing does
Waterproofing is intended to prevent rainwater from entering through the roof. It focuses on continuity of the waterproof layer and vulnerable details such as cracks, upstands, penetrations, joints and drainage areas. Can a roof need both?
Yes. A property owner may want improved thermal performance while the existing roof also needs waterproofing renewal. In that situation the layers need to be considered as a compatible roof system, not as two unrelated products placed on top of one another.
How do you decide what comes first?
Inspection comes first. Active leaks, failed coatings, cracks and drainage defects need to be identified before a new insulation layer is planned. The proposed system should account for the existing substrate and the way water will be managed.
Do reflective roof coatings count as insulation?
